The Night You Died
I know you won’t remember,
but how could I forget?
the night you folded into me
and I feared you might be dead.
I hauled you through the mud,
body hefted like a sack;
Paul sang Long Hot Summer
as you threw up down my back.
I held your head till morning,
scared of what would be said
how I’d face your parents
if you really were near dead.
But when the grey dawn came,
Your eyes were clear and bright
Sparkling Green for the new day
Mine red my dark night
Now you live in another world,
a life of gentle virtue;
I doubt you ever think
of what I was to you.
a life of gentle virtue;
I doubt you ever think
of what I was to you.
Two kids who couldn’t keep
a lid on their desire
we were running wild,
too young to fear the fire.
But though you won’t remember,
I never will forget
the night you fell against me
and I feared you might be dead.
